 All about podcasting Minimize

Whats a Podcast? and how do i get it to work
Essentially you need itunes or iPodder on your pc. In iTunes click ADvanced ....Subscribe to Podcast and enter the xml  address in the box.  To find out more about what is podcasting you could try:
No one likes Onions - a site that discusses it.

Is it easy to do a podcast?

Put simply – pretty easy. You need  a microphone, a pc with a decent sound card, some mixing software such as sony sonic studio or Mixcraft, a quiet room and webspace. That will get you an mp3 file on the internet. You can add in music and jingles.

Then you need a website to host the show. Put links on the website to the mp3 files so folk can right click and save the file to their pcs.

Finally if you want to publish to iTunes or other podcast sites you need to set up a xml RSS feed.

RSS is Really Simple Syndication - the code that tells itunes and ipodder and many other sites organising podcats where to find your podcast, when it has been updated and what the latest version of the show is.

Now this is not a computer magazine so I won’t get all technical and you will need to read up on how you do that yourself. Check out: http://www.feedvalidator.org/docs/rss2.html for more details and more on RSS and what it all means.

http://www.nobodylikesonions.com/feedcheck/ has a feed validator that checks that your xml and mp3 files are corretcly all linked up so that the feed should work.

Here is an example of a bit of my xml file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>

- <rss version="2.0" xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/" xmlns:itunes="http://www.itunes.com/DTDs/Podcast-1.0.dtd">
- <channel>

  </item>

You now upload that file to the same place as the sound files and then tell itunes, ipodder and each and every podcast directoty what the feed address is. Put it also on your web site and folk can then copy the text and paste it into itunes.

And thats about it.
