Chapter 2 of Nortern Crown : The Warriors Way

A visit to the nearby town of Weighton with his father and brother shows Cerdic that someone at least does not appreciate him or his family. But we have yet to find out who and why. Soon afterwards Cerdic and his friends begin to be tutored by Grettir – an old friend of the family in the warrior’s art. We see Cerdic grow up to a youth who is gaining some of the authority that his father as Lord of his village has. He also starts to show some interest in Elfreda – a girl from the village. During training sessions he again encounters animosity in the form of the youth Hussa from Weighton. Hussa however will not say why he hates Cerdic.
From beyond the village we hear of the rise to power of Aethelfrith a great warrior lord and king of Bernicia – a nation to the north. Rumours of gathering war clouds concern the villagers. The rumours prove true as smoke is seen rising from both the villa and Weighton. It is a raid from the neighbouring Welsh kingdom of Elmet.
Chapter 1 of Nortern Crown : The Villa

Cerdic recalls the events that forged Northumbria from a chaotic pagan past to a civilised literate Christian nation in his old age. But his interest is not in writing history but telling the story of the men and women who were part of it. His tale begins in his early childhood in a Saxon Village in the small nation of Deira on the Humber. In the quiet world of the farm he and his friends the agile but short Cuthbert and the huge but kindly brute Eduard long to live out the adventures they hear in the tales of poets and bards. We also hear of the struggle between Cerdic’s people – the Saxons and the native Welsh in the years after the fall of Roman Britain.
